5 Ways to Show Your Senior Your Love This Valentine’s Day
It’s almost Valentine’s Day, the holiday where we show the people that we love how much we care about them. If you have an elderly parent or loved one, you may be looking for fun and unique ways to show them how much they mean to you.
You don’t have to spend a lot to let the senior in your life know you care, you just need to get creative and plan ahead. Here are 5 ways that you can show your love to your senior this Valentine’s Day:
1. Plan a getaway day
When was the last time you spent the day with your elderly parent or loved one with no agenda except showing them you care? Take a break from the everyday nuances of senior care and find special things to do for them during your day together. Take them to their favorite lunch spot, book store, park, or event. Make the day all about them and cherish every moment as you make memories that will last a lifetime.
2. Make their favorite meal
Does your special senior have a favorite meal? Take time to create a memorable night where you spend time side by side in the kitchen to create a meal they will never forget. Make it special using the fine china and while you are cooking, talk to them about whatever it is that makes them happy. Seniors often love reminiscing about their past, and you will learn valuable information about your history and enjoy preparing the meal that you know they love almost as much as they enjoy the time spent together.
3. Write them a letter
Many seniors are from a generation where writing letters was a popular and cathartic thing to do. With the responsibilities of senior care often falling to the family members that are closest to the senior, sometimes you might fail to take the time to tell your loved ones just how much they truly mean to you. Take this time to write your senior a letter that tells them exactly how important they are and just how much they are loved. To really make their day, have other family members or friends write their sentiments down too and present them to your senior in a special book or binder.
4. Decorate their home
If your parent or loved one who receives senior care at home has mobility issues, or maybe can no longer drive or get out of the house often, consider decorating their home for the holiday with pink, purple, and red hearts so they can see and feel the love from the comfort of their own home. You might even consider leaving special love notes around the house on sticky paper which is sure to make them smile.
5. Make them a special memento
If gifts are appreciated by your senior, you can make them a very personal memento by using pictures or other special tokens that have meaning between you and your loved one. Scrapbooks, photo albums, and slideshows are all relatively inexpensive ways to show your senior how much they mean to you.
